Controlling an AR Drone with your Nokia phone is now possible and promises hours of fun

Our friendly developers over at Nokia Forum have been busy little bees lately, and must say that some of the apps they have been releasing, have been awesome. The latest one is a little Qt app called the AR. Drone app from the Danish software engineer Nikolaj Østerbye …….. hang on AR drone??

That’s right, some of you might have come across this name on the www – The AR. Drone is a quadrocopter – an aircraft that is powered by four rotors – made by Parrot, which connects to a controller using WiFi. It also has two cameras on-board which allow you to see what the drone sees right from the screen on your phone.

Up to now the mobile app to control one of these drones, was only available for the iPhones and iPads, but if you’re the lucky owner of one of these drones, you can now control it with your Symbian^3 device, like the N8 – C7 and E7. You won’t be able to play any Augmented Reality games like with the iPhone or iPad, but the Qt app is only in it’s infancy and as it’s a working app, the guys at Forum Nokia have made the source code available so that you can make changes or add anything you feel is missing. It’s a bit like a developers playground.

This is what the app looks like for the iPhone and iPads – with the AR games and all:

Now this is what the Qt app looks like on an N8 at the moment, remember what I said – it’s a working app so many of the features that you saw in the previous video will eventually be included in the Qt version – we hope – the option is yours if you are a developer, off course and if you are, you can get your hands on the source code over at Nokia Forum

For those not able to program or make apps, just download the app in its current version from the Ovi Store and pair up your AR.Drone – if you have one, if you don’t have one – you can order yours on line right now at http://ardrone.parrot.com/buy-ardrone and start flying that quadrocopter for hours of fun.
