Synchronica plc, a leading developer of next-generation mobile messaging services deployed by more than 80 operators worldwide, is to acquire Nokia’s Operator-Branded Messaging (OBM) business, formed when Nokia acquired Oz Communications back in 2008.
The announcement provides Synchronica with a complementary North American business and supports Nokia’s stated goal of divesting non-core assets. Synchronica will acquire 10 tier-one North American mobile operator customers servicing more than 6 million active end users, as well as Nokia’s Email, IM and Social Networking gateway and client software and associated patents.
The acquired Nokia technology will be merged with Synchronica Mobile Gateway. Synchronica will also continue to operate Nokia’s messaging technology as a standalone platform and is forging a long-term relationship with Nokia for the continued development, maintenance and support of the messaging gateway and client software that will continue to be shipped with many of Nokia’s feature phones and Smartphones.
Synchronica, already the de facto mobile messaging leader in emerging markets, sees this acquisition as a major milestone in its bid to become the leading global player in next-generation mobile messaging.
