Like most of us, waiting for the latest FW / SW update for one’s Nokia device can be quite depressing at times especially when it can take weeks before it finally reaches you. You can better some of you might have been hearing about a new FW update (1600.2487.8107.12070) that is being rolled out slowly in selected countries and regions. According to a recent post on the official Nokia Discussion Forum, this update is still not being released in many countries yet. They further say that it is a mandatory software update that will significantly improve the battery performance of the Nokia 800 to their customers. However, all features and enhancements will be included in subsequent software updates.
Well the good news here we got for you today is that for those of you that do not want to wait and would like to have this new Official FW update right now! Yes…… right now, you can do so by following a few simple steps below. We must warn you though:
Following this procedure is entirely at your own risk, neither Nokia-News.com or it’s owners accept any liability or responsibility for any failures, undesirable reboots, data loss, loss of warranty, or damages to your device. The information contained within this guide and the tools to carry out the procedure have been provided by the folks over at the XDA Forum.
We tried the method on our own Lumia 800 device without any glitches, but you must stick to the following steps listed below and download the correct files that match your current device product code. You can check your code on the label on the back of the phone or from settings. What you will need is to download the following 4 data files below: (just click on each of the mirror or host links)
- Latest version of Zune – Preferably 4.8 (4.8.2345.0)
- WP7 update tool
- WP7 update cab sender tool
- Software update file
Also you will need to download a copy of WinZIP or Winrar if you don’t already have that on your PC.
Let us ok, so lets start:
- Make sure Zune is installed correctly along with your phone. You must have it set so that it’s the primary updater which is linking your phone to your account.
- Double click on the WP7 update tool, inside you’ll find two versions, x64 is for 64bit versions of windows, X86 is for 32bit versions of windows. To check which version you have click your windows start button, right click the “computer” button, select “properties” and you’ll find the information in there. Now you know your version open the correct folder and you’ll find a file called “Setup-UpdateWP-Xxx.exe”, run this file and it will install itself. You’ll see it start to install then disappear, that’s normal.
- Extract the contents of the WP7_Update_Cab_Sender.zip file to an empty folder on your PC, you’ll see two folders and a batch file “WP7 Update Cab Sender”.
- Copy the software update .cab file you downloaded to the same folder as the batch file, this is important. Do not extract the contents of the .cab file.
- Connect your phone to the PC, allow it to sync with Zune as normal, then close Zune leaving the phone connected.
- Run the “Wp7 Update Cab Sender” batch file and you’ll see a DOS style text window asking you to select a letter. To start the procedure press the letter “S”. Do not close the text window, as it shows you the progress of the procedure or any warnings. Do not disconnect your phone until it is up and running again.
Update Tool Text during update Procedure
Now sit back and watch as the progress is updated in that window, first the phone will reboot then it will display an updating screen. After a while a white bar will start to move across the screen showing the progress, when it’s finished the phone will reboot. From sending the cab file to the phone and seeing the phone completing it takes around 10 to 15 minutes although ours went substantially quicker. When the phone reboots it will tell you the update completed successfully.
We checked our device and we have not seen any loss of data/apps etc. and you will also see that the regional version has remained unchanged.
And voila – the end result
Please let us know if you going to give this a go and how it went afterwards, just remember to follow these steps above carefully but most importantly you doing this at your own risk!!! Good luck!!!
